How to Protect Your WhatsApp from Hackers in 2025 – Kenya Guide

WhatsApp is the most used messaging app in Kenya, and that makes it a big target for scammers and hackers. Over the last year, many Kenyans have reported losing their accounts to cybercriminals who then use the hacked accounts to ask friends and family for money or spread fake promotions.

If you lose your WhatsApp, you also lose access to your personal chats, groups, and business contacts, and recovering it can be stressful.

Here’s how you can protect yourself today:

1. Enable Two-Step Verification

Go to Settings → Account → Two-step verification and set a 6-digit PIN. This adds a second layer of security so even if someone gets your SMS code, they can’t log in without your PIN. Whatsapp will occassionally ask you to enter the pin when you visit the app, so make sure you remember the pin.

2. Never Share Your WhatsApp Verification Code

If you ever receive a 6-digit SMS code and someone asks you for it, don’t give it. WhatsApp will never call or text you asking for it. Most hacks happen because people unknowingly give away this code.

3. Check Your Linked Devices Regularly

Your linked devices are devices you have maybe linked to your whatsapp account through whatsapp web. Hackers can use WhatsApp Web to spy on your chats.

Go to Settings → Linked Devices, and log out of any device you don’t recognize immediately.

4. Lock Your App

Use your phone’s fingerprint, face ID, or a pattern lock to protect your WhatsApp from anyone who physically gets your phone.

5. Be Wary of Links in Groups

Many WhatsApp group hacks start with a fake promo link like “Win 1GB Safaricom data” or “Ksh 500 M-Pesa bonus.” These links can steal your login details. Especially when you enter you password, which they can use to hack your accounts with.

💡Extra Tip:

If your account is hacked, email support@whatsapp.com with the subject “Lost/Stolen: Please deactivate my account”. Then reinstall the app and log in with your phone number to regain access.

Final Word

Your WhatsApp is not just a chat app for many Kenyans, it’s a business tool, a family connection, and a personal diary. Protect it the same way you protect your bank or m-pesa account.

Stay alert. Stay safe.
